Wall-E

August 29, 2008

It is simply Beeeeeeeeayyyyutiful :)

Wall-E is about a highly emotive and curious robot that falls in love :) . Other than his futuristic cockroach pet, he doesn’t have any company left, and then from outer space, along comes the love of his life, EVA. It is love at first sight and our stumbling little hero sets off on a hilariously adventurous journey to rescue and impress his love.

Only great artists can make you feel so much emotion without a single word being said in the first hour of the movie. The first class animation keeps you riveted to your chair, waiting to watch what happens next. Disney movies have this quality of getting sweet messages through to the audiences without making it look too good to be true.

Do go and watch this movie, and you will feel good the entire week :)

Taare Jameen Par

December 29, 2007

taare

Emotional people like me always cherish movies that make us cry. But it was not the drama in the film but the innocent expressions on the pure hearted faces that really touched my heart this time.

Taare zameen par is a wonderful experience. I knew what the topic of the movie was and I expected a glamorized version of the story of many little kids that suffer from dyslexia, kind of how Black dealt with the story of the deaf and dumb. But this movie manages to stay away from the melodrama and dark grandeur that would have tempted many a director. It dwells more on the innocent minds and amazingly imaginative day dreams of little kids than anything else. One fine point to prove this…. The “Star” in the cast, Mr. Aamir Khan makes an appearance only after the intermission. The true star of course is  Darsheel Safary, as Ishaan Avasthi. That boy’s face can say so many things, he doesn’t need to speak.

I don’t think the plot needs to be explained. Basically Taare Zameen Par is about a dyslexic boy who is misunderstood and pressurized by everyone including his parents. He cannot help it, but he is unable to do what others can do and he is forced again and again to do precisely what he just cannot do. The pressure mounts and the anger builds, but all of it can vanish away at the sight of something as plain and simple as a broken kite, or the sight of bright colours like red and yellow blending, or the sight of the tiny fish in the gutter that nobody else seems to notice or care for. But the world fails to understand the boy and he is driven into a boarding school as ‘punishment’ for his behaviour. The little one breaks down completely and is on the verge of losing the spirit of living when the new art professor Ram Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) notices him. The teacher, who can identify with the child’s problem perhaps a little too perfectly, struggles to turn the child’s world the right way up. He succeeds and the climax is, as expected, very touching. The movie does raise some not-so-subtle questions about the education system and how every parent wants toppers in the family. Perhaps I should reserve the topic for another post, but for now I will say this. I agree to the movie’s point of view partially, but there are so many of us who do not suffer from any disability or on the other hand do not have any extraordinary talent. And most of us, then, have to participate in what has been called the ‘race’ of life however much we might try to convince ourselves otherwise.

The music is wonderful, Shankar Ehsaan n Loy manage to grab the innocence of it all and yet make ‘hit’ music. Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics are amazing and convincing. I loved all the songs, especially “Maa” and “Jame Raho“. The only thing that was not really convincing in the movie was the fact that the mother of an 8 year old fails to realize that her son cannot understand most alphabets. A little hard to believe, isn’t it? Anyways, in all the directors have done a great job, and so have the little kids. Hats off to the movie and thumbs up to anyone who wants to watch it.

Laaga chunari me daag

October 22, 2007

Watched a movie in the theater after a long long time. Probably the last movie I saw in the theater (or rather the multiplex ;-) ) was Harry Potter in July. I blame Engineering and rules about “another female required if i want to watch a movie with my friends” for that.

Well coming to the movie. In one sentence it would be, “everything was as expected..nothing special”. Although the storyline is all-too-filmy, this movie is worth a watch only becasue of the way the director has handled the subject. Although it is not as touching as Parineeta (Pradeep Sarkar’s earlier film), this movie manages to keep you interested and thinking.

So we start the story with two naive sisters, living in Varanasi till fate and evil relatives threaten to make their life living hell. Then the older daughter, who hasn’t even completed her education till SSC decides to take things in her own hands and be the son of the family. She moves to Mumbai, and soon realizes she can’t make it in that evil city. But alas, the situation at home has worsened, and she is told by a hassled mother, that she cannot return unless she has some way of providing money. So the village damsel finds herself taking up the life of a high class escort, one that goes around with only the richest of businessmen. Yashraj productions has managed to put in excuses for the leading cast to visit Italy and Zurich and sing songs there. The later half of the movie deals with the younger sister arriving in Mumbai complete with an MBA, and the struggle that the elder one has to endure to keep “chhoti” from knowing the truth. All ends well as it should in a hindi movie, and the moral of the story is: If you are ever forced to become a prostitute, hope against hope that a guy who is as handsome as Abhishek Bacchan will fall in love with you and accept you in spite of “knowing everything about you”.

Sounds boring, but good direction covers up for the soppy script. But then it does make you think. Yes women have freedom, the are self-reliant. Of course we see so many female CEOs these days. I’m no feminist. But some questions do trouble me. Do women have the respect they deserve? When will women be able to travel in buses and trains without hesitating? Have you heard a girl whistelling at a guy? Or a girl threatening to throw acid on the guy’s face when he refuses to marry her? As I said, I’m no feminist. I have seen many cases of a girl ruining a guy’s entire life without as much as second thought. All coins have two sides, but some facts remain. My generation lays as much importance to the sanctity and purity of women, as did all the generations before me. Maybe the times have changed. Maybe these days it is the boyfriend instead of the husband who does the questioning. But questions are still asked, and they will be asked for a long long time to come.

Life in a…Metro

July 14, 2007

Characters:

Shruti: Kokona Sen

Monty: Irfan Khan

Amol: Dharmendra

Shivani: Nafisa Ali

Shikha: Shilpa Shetty

Ranjeet: K. K. Menon

Aakash: Shiney Ahuja

Rahul: Sharman Joshi

Neha: Kangana Ranaut

I liked this movie a lot. For once you have a film based on relationships and yet it doesn’t have any of the running around the trees in the rain stuff. The whole “everyone is cheating on someone” scenario is a little unsettling, and things get just a little too ironic and i found myself squirming in my seat, wondering if such situations were plausible. But hey its supposed to be fictitious. :-)

Its no use explaining the stories, watching the movie will be a much better experience. I liked Shruti and Monty the most. Monty’s hilarious and yet wise remarks make you grin and burst out laughing. “Ab realationships toh guarantee card ke saath thodi aate hai? ” :-D “Magar blouse aur pettycoat to uske maap ke sil gaye hai, pehle kyu nahi bola? ” :-) :-D Dharmendra and Nafisa Ali look so good, and act so naturally. The music is really great, although it’s irritating to have the not-so-good-looking band appear time and again throughout the movie. :-P

The part of the movie i liked the most was how symbolic some scenes are, and how much thought there seems to have gone behind making each scene. The poster of Brokeback mountain in the radio station manager’s office gives u an idea of what is going to happen. When Shikha enters Aakash’s friend’s house, she is shown in a red lighting, and he is shown in green lighting. It makes you smile knowingly. When Ranjeet confesses his mistake to Shikha, both are sitting across the table from each other, wearing white..peace meeting?????? Amol’s words after Shivani’s death have different meaning to Shikha and  Shruti, and both of them learn something from those words. Even when Neha is fed a piece of Shikha’s n Ranjeet’s wedding anniversary’s cake by Shruti, you find yourself smirking at the irony.

All in all its an interesting movie to watch. Do watch it :-)

OOTP

Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix:

OOPT

I went to see the movie more as a ritual than a necessity. I had not missed any of the previous movies, so why miss this one?? And i was also a little curious. Of the books i had found the fifth one the most boring. Hardly anything exciting happens till the end, and even then the action at the end did not satisfy all the suspense and curiosity that had been built up after Voldemort returns in the fourth book..so i was skeptical when i went to see the movie…but boy was i surprised..

Putting it straight, i liked this movie more than any of the others. It’s more mature (not solely because of the French kiss :-D ) it’s got all the actors looking a lot more at ease with their acting, and many many details that delight you, and you think to yourself “hey thats exactly how i imagined it to be” :-) Imelda Staunton does amazing work as Umbridge complete with the fake cough. Mrs. Weasley has finally got red hair {phewww..}, and the climax is amazing.

On the down-side, the extra dialogues that are not to be found in the book get boring after some time. And many characters do not show up at all. But all in all this one’s good :-)

For all the fans..this one will delight you and for all the non-believers..maybe this one will convert u :-D
